What is Filament?

Filament, in the context of 3D printing, is the material used as raw input to create three-dimensional objects through additive manufacturing processes such as FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) or FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication).

Filaments are usually thin, flexible wires wound on spools and come in various types and compositions, each offering different properties and characteristics. Here are the most common filament materials used in 3D printing:

Filament Types and Characteristics:

PLA (Polylactic Acid) : PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. It is popular due to its ease of use, low cost and minimal warping during printing.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): ABS is a strong and durable thermoplastic known for its impact resistance and ability to withstand higher temperatures compared to PLA. It is widely used in applications requiring strength and durability.

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol): PETG is a durable and transparent thermoplastic that combines the strength of ABS with the ease of printing of PLA. Its excellent layer adhesion and minimal shrinkage make it suitable for functional parts and prototypes.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) : TPU is a flexible and elastic filament known for its rubber-like properties. It is used to create flexible parts such as phone cases and gaskets.

Nylon : Nylon is a strong and durable thermoplastic with excellent mechanical properties. It is widely used for parts that require high strength, flexibility and chemical resistance, such as gears, bearings and mechanical components.

Special Filaments : Specialty filaments such as wood-filled, metal-filled, conductive filaments and more are also available. These filaments are made by mixing base materials with additives such as wood fibers, metal powders or conductive materials to achieve specific properties or aesthetics.

If we list the special filaments in detail:

1. Wood Filled Filament: Wood filled filament contains fine wood particles mixed with PLA or other thermoplastic materials. This filament provides a wood-like appearance and texture. It is used in applications such as furniture prototypes, decorative objects and art models.

2. Metal Filled Filament: Metal filled filament contains metal powders mixed with materials such as PLA or ABS. This filament provides a metallic look and weight. It is used in applications such as metallic prototypes, sculptures and decorative objects.

3. Conductive Filament: Conductive filament contains materials such as PLA or ABS loaded with carbon or graphite. This filament provides electrical conductivity. It is used to produce prototypes of circuits, sensors, antennas and other electronic components.

4. Glow-in-the-Dark Filament: Glow-in-the-dark filament contains phosphorescent pigments and emits light in dark environments. This filament is used in applications such as safety signs, decorative objects and toys.

5. Thermochromic Filament: Thermochromic filament contains pigments that change color in response to temperature changes. This filament is used for thermal indicators and colorful designs.

6. Magnetic Filament: Magnetic filament contains magnetic particles mixed with materials such as PLA or ABS to attract or repel magnets. It is used in applications such as magnetic closures, fasteners and training models.

Since each specific type of filament has a specific use and specific requirements, careful consideration should be given when deciding which material to choose.

The characteristics of each filament and 3D printer and the manufacturer's recommendations should be taken into account. These temperature ranges can be used as a general guide, but you can make adjustments by trial and error to achieve optimum printing results. The best printing temperature for Filetto PLA filaments is 60 C with an extrusion temperature of 220. You can contact us to consult the printing settings you will use in Filetto filaments.
